Editing a Machine

There may be times when you want to change the attributes of a machine that is already registered. If you change the network adapter (ethernet card) for a machine, you need to update the hardware address so that the machine can be identified with the new card. You need change the location if you move to a new office that is in a different building or even on a different subnet within the same building.

To edit information for a machine, click on the machine's hostname in the Registered Machines table on the Main page.

Editing Basic Information

On the Machine Information page, you can change the information that was supplied when the machine was registered. To edit the basic information for a machine:

  1. Type or select the new value in the field you want to change.

  2. Click on the Update button.

  3. The Machine Information page will be redisplayed with a confirmation that the machine has been updated.

You can edit the following fields on the Machine Information page:

Also, if you have selected "static" for your IP address mode, you will see the IP address assigned to your machine. You cannot edit the IP Address field.

Setting Protections

You can add or change the list of people who can view and edit your machine information and options. To view, edit or change the list of people with access to your information, click on the [View/Update Protections] link at the top of the Machine Information page and see the instructions in Setting Protections.

Adding DNS Resources

DNS Resources are additional information that is provided by the DNS servers. These are usually responces to specific additional queries other than the usual "What is this host's IP address?" question.

  1. If the DNS Resources section is not visible on the Machine Information page, click on the [View Advanced Options] link at the top of the page.

The Machine Information page will be refreshed with the DNS Resources and DHCP Options sections near the bottom of the page.

  2. To add a new DNS resource, click the Add DNS Resource link in the DNS Recources title bar.

  3. Select the DNS resource type to add and click on Continue. Possible choices are

  4. Fill in the additional information required to compleat the record and click on Continue.

    • For an MX record, you will need to provide a hostname that will handle mail sent to the current host, a Metric Number and a "Time to Live" (TTL) value. The Metric Number is used to determine the order that multiple servers are accessed in. A good starting value is 20. The TTL is how long the servers will continue to cache this value before looking it up again. Leaving this value at 0 will pickup the default TTL for the domain.
If you are trying to set an MX record for mail sent to a third level domain (XXX.EXAMPLE.ORG) then you must contact the maintainers as this requires a modification to the zone record itself.

    • For a CNAME record, you will need the the fully qualified hostname that you want this machine to respond to and a "Time to Live" (TTL) value. The hostname must be in the same domain as the host or the intervention of a maintainer will be required. See DNS Resources, MX record (above) for explaination of TTL.

Deleting DNS Resources

DNS Recources can be deleted by clicking on the delete link corresponding to the resource to be deleted.

Adding DHCP Options

DHCP Options are additional information provided to the host at the time that it requests it's IP address from the network servers. These will either override or add onto the defaults that the system provides for the current host.

  1. If the DHCP Options section is not visible on the Machine Information page, click on the [View Advanced Options] link at the top of the page.

The Machine Information page will be refreshed with the DHCP Options and DNS Resources sections near the bottom of the page.

  2. To add a new DHCP Option, click the Add DHCP Option link in the DHCP Options title bar.

  3. Select the DHCP Option type to add and click on Continue. Possible choices are

  4. Fill in the additional information required to compleat the record and click on Continue.

    • For a filename DHCP option, you must provide the tftp filename that the host will use to obtain additional configuration information and a "Time to live" value. This filename must be contained in double quotes ("/conffiles/myconfig.conf"). See DNS Resources, MX record (above) for explaination of TTL.

    • For a next-server DHCP option, you must provide the IP address of the server that the host will get it's additional configuration from if it is different from the DHCP server that responded to the request. See DNS Resources, MX record (above) for explaination of TTL.

Deleting DHCP Options

DHCP Options can be deleted by clicking on the delete link corresponding to the option to be deleted.

Deleting a Machine

It's a good idea to delete a machine when it has been disposed of or, for whatever reason, the entry is no longer valid. For example, if a new ethernet card was purchased for the machine and, for some reason, a new registration entry was added with a different hostname (instead of updating the original registration) you would want to delete the old machine registration.

WARNING! Deleting a machine does not simply remove it from your machine list, it removes registration for the machine completely. If you delete a machine and someone else is using that machine, they will not be able to access the network after you delete the entry.

To delete a machine...

  1. Click on the [Delete Machine] tab on the Machine Information page.

A confirmation page will be displayed asking if you are sure you want to delete the machine.

  2. Click on "Yes, delete this machine" if you really want to delete the machine.

The Main page will be displayed with a message indicating that the machine was deleted.
